KwaZulu-Natal - Twelve people were killed in crashes between Friday night and Saturday morning, including two parents and their child, KwaZulu-Natal EMS reported.

Spokesperson Robert McKenzie said a father and mother were found dead at an accident scene on the N2 near Murchison in the Ugu District at 22:00 on Friday night.

"A child was found critically injured and paramedics started treatment before rushing to Murchison Hospital. The child passed away as they arrived," he said.

A short distance away from the site, a car believed to have been involved in the crash was found on the side of the road.

Several people were treated before being transported to hospital.

In a separate incident in the early hours of Saturday morning on the N2 between eSikhawini and Empangeni, an accident involving two cars resulted in the death of two people.

One person was seriously injured and three others sustained minor injuries, McKenzie said.

Two people were also seriously injured when a truck jack-knifed on the N3 northbound between Currys Post and Lions River in Umgungundlovu at 03:00 on Saturday.

The incident resulted in the closure of the highway, which has since been reopened.

A dozen people died on the roads, McKenzie said, including the seven people killed on Friday evening in a crash involving a bakkie and a car on a rural road in the Harry Gwala District.

Four women and three men died in the accident between Highflats and St Faith's shortly after 18:00.

Four others were critically injured. The Jaws-of-Life had to be used to free one of the injured. They were treated on the scene and taken to hospital.

Authorities are investigating the accidents.

McKenzie encouraged motorists to drive carefully and not take to the road under the influence of alcohol.
