Cape Town – Nehawu-affiliated parliamentary workers suspended their strike on Monday.

This was pending the outcome of a meeting between the union’s leaders and Parliament’s management, facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union went on an unprotected strike on Thursday, following a week of lunchtime protests.

They wanted Parliament to stop planned salary deductions and lift the suspension of their branch chairperson, Sthembiso Tembe, and member Michael Sithole.

The deductions were made because of the no work, no pay rule that applied during their month-long strike in November 2015.

Parliament said on Thursday that it would be unprocedural to withdraw the disciplinary proceedings against the employees.
