People take to the streets after KZN chief axes local headman

Durban – At least 1 000 people have taken to the streets of iSithebe, north of Durban, allegedly over the dismissal of a local nduna (headman).

The crowd, many from the local Mandini area, on Monday began barricading all entrances and exits to iSithebe, a largely industrial area. Reports of burning tyres and trees have also emerged.

IPSS Medical Rescue head Dylan Meyrick told News24 that there was minimal violence.

"The only time there was an issue was when the fire department arrived and attempted to put fires out. People then began throwing stones.

"It is unconfirmed, but it is believed the local chief fired or dismissed one of his ndunas and replaced him. The community was up in arms about this."

When asked if the protests had ended by Monday afternoon, Meyrick said: "I know the community have gone to the chief’s home. But there is definitely a chance of them coming back."

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the demonstration, saying protesters had blocked the road with burning tyres and trees.

"Police are at the scene monitoring the situation and no arrest has been made. No damages have been reported," he said.
