Durban - A man was lucky to escape unharmed after his vehicle plunged off a bridge into a river in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban.

NSRI sea rescue personnel were called out around 15:00 on Saturday to assist.

The driver reportedly freed himself from the vehicle and swam to the river bank. Rescue personnel then began retrieving his vehicle from the river.

On their way back, they were called to a second accident close by.

The crew stabilised two occupants of a vehicle involved in the second crash, and stood down after paramedics arrived.

The crew was treated to free coffee by the Wimpy at Arbor Crossing, Amamzimtoti after their hard day’s work.

"This kind gesture was greatly appreciated," said Durban Station commander Clifford Ireland.
