40 years ago today Liberation struggle hero and Black Conciousness Movement leader Steve Biko died in a police cell at the then Pretoria Central Prison ( now Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre). He was beaten severely by apartheid security police while in detention in Port Elizabeth and sustained serious injuries including brain damage, which lead to his death.

To commemorate his passing President Jacob Zuma attended a wreath laying ceremony was held in the cell that Biko passed away earlier today.
