Pretoria – One person was killed and another injured in a shooting incident in Copesville, Pietermaritzburg, paramedics said.

"Shortly after 06:00 paramedics from ER24 arrived on a small road in Copesville where they found two vehicles standing close to each other.

"A man was found near one of the vehicles with approximately five gunshot wounds in his chest, back and arms," ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

Another person was found with multiple gunshot wounds near the other vehicle. Vermaak said there was unfortunately nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene.

The critically injured man was treated on the scene for his injuries and rushed off to a nearby hospital for further care.

"The patient explained to paramedics that the man stopped in front of him and opened fire.

"Apparently a struggle broke out and the other person was also shot. However, the events will be investigated by the police that attended the scene," he said.
