Johannesburg - Two Pikitup trucks were shot at on Rand Show Road near Nasrec, Soweto causing them to collide, the City of Johannesburg said on Thursday.

The incident happened just before midnight on Wednesday, the city said.

"The drivers of the trucks, which were deployed to collect waste amidst the ongoing illegal work stoppage by the waste management entity’s workers, fled the scene during the shooting."

Security personnel, who were escorting the trucks, called for help.

"A group of other temporary workers who were on the trucks at the time were left in a state of shock," according to the city.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau visited the scene shortly after the shooting and spoke to the temporary workers.

"The City is currently finalising collaboration plans with various law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service, to ensure that the delivery of Pikitup services continues safely, and that the perpetrators are brought to book," he said.

The city said the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) had recently distanced itself from workers who were damaging city property, emptying bins onto the streets and intimidating temporary workers.
