Pietermaritzburg's very own Idols SA season 12 winner, Noma Khumalo, treated her fans with her singing at a reception on Thursday.

The Msunduzi Municipality together with the Department of Arts and Culture hosted a homecoming event for the Idols winner and some of her fellow contestants from KZN.

Khumalo participated in a motorcade which took her from her home in Pelham to Freedom Square near the city hall, where a mini concert was held.

Khumalo was among her fellow Idols contestants, Pietermaritzburg’s Nosihe Zulu, Sanele Mkhize from Durban and Wooden Mic winner Mbishop Shezi, who all performed for a cheering Pietermaritzburg crowd.

The excited Khumalo was warmly welcomed by people, who cheered and took selfies with her.

“I am very excited and feel extremely special. I would like to thank all the departments involved and the municipality for supporting me throughout my Idols journey.

“The victory is not mine alone, it is for KZN and especially Pietermaritzburg. Thank you for all the votes and support. I love you all,” said Khumalo, blowing a huge kiss.

Msunduzi mayor Themba Njilo said he was glad his killer “jiving moves” were not in vain.

“When I was jiving and canvassing for Noma, I was sure that the award would come to Pietermaritzburg. So I am happy.”

He went on to say he always encourages young people to break away from crowds and to follow their dreams by getting out of their comfort zone.

“Noma came out of her comfort zone and managed to do amazing things.

“She will be a good role model and I am sure she will assist in helping scout for more young talent in and around Pietermaritzburg,” said Njilo.

KZN MEC for Department of Arts and Culture Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi said the event was purely to celebrate and thank Noma and the KZN Idols contestants for putting the province on the map.

“They are all talented individuals and we want to see them grow in the industry,” said Sithole-Moloi.

She also urged fans and supporters not to purchase pirated music.

“Stop downloading and buying fake music, we need to support these young people as they also contribute to the economy of this country,” said Sithole-Moloi, adding that piracy is the reason many artists die in poverty.
