Johannesburg – The father of the 12-year-old boy who was found dead in a veld in Kagiso, Krugersdorp, last week has been arrested in connection with his murder.

The boy was found with his lips removed after a resident directed officers to the veld situated between Swaneville and Rietvallei.

Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said the 47-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday evening.

"During police investigations, an anonymous member of the community came forward with information that led to last night's successful arrest of the suspect at his home in Rietvallei extension 23," Sibiya said in a statement.

The man is currently being detained at Kagiso police station while investigations continue.

A case docket of murder has been reopened and the suspect charged. He is due to appear in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court soon.

Last week News24 reported that the body of Banele Bendile, a resident from Orlando, Soweto was found.

The body had an open wound on the right cheek. The boy was dressed in a striped blue and white shirt, and trousers.

Sibiya said that early indications were that the boy was strangled.

He said that when family members were asked about the boy's disappearance and why they didn’t report him missing, they said that "apparently he was mentally disturbed and would come and go".
