Police clamp down on gang violence in Cape Flats

2015-12-26 21:15

Durban - The police arrested a 40 year-old man for being in possession of an illegal firearm and rounds of ammunition in Hanover Park on Christmas day, the Western Cape police said on Saturday.

In a statement, the police said members of Operation Combat made the arrest in a bid to clamp down on gang violence that has been plaguing the Cape Flats.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the arrest followed the murder of a four year-old boy in the area on Wednesday December 23.

“He was shot and killed by unknown gunmen. The firearm seized is believed to be the murder weapon. The suspect has been charged with possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.”

The man is expected to appear in court soon.

Operation Combat said Potelwa, is a provincial intervention aimed at curbing gang violence and its manifestations in the Western Cape.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Gary Kruser said the arrests should send a strong message to criminals and the Cape Flats community should feel safer with these criminals behind bars.
