Potchefstroom – A police constable and two others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the North Gauteng High Court, sitting in Potchefstroom, on Thursday for killing three murder suspects in 2015, authorities said.

Constable Jim Maphale and two police informants Mpho Matlala and Lwazi Dlangamandla also each received a 10-year sentence for attempted murder, two years for assault, four years for kidnapping and four years for defeating the ends of justice, Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

The court found the three guilty of murder in June.

Dlamini said the sentence follows an IPID investigation after the bodies of murder accused Thabiso Mthembu, Andile Ndlovu and Tshepo Henry Nhlapo were found in Carleton in May 2015.

They were believed to have been tortured and executed by police officers and informants who were investigating the case.

The deceased were subsequently found innocent of all the charges against them, Dlamini said.

He said the constable, as well as his commander, were dismissed from the police service following an internal disciplinary process.
