Johannesburg – A police officer was airlifted to hospital after he was shot in Isipingo on Wednesday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Paramedics arrived at a shooting at the Pelgrim train station on Fayers Place in Isipingo, Rescue Care spokesperson Ceron Lennox said.

“Under police guard our medics were escorted through dense bush to find an injured officer," said Lennox.

The officer was treated for a gunshot wound and was then carried to a police helicopter.

With advanced life support paramedics, the officer was airlifted to Netcare St Augustine's Hospital.

According to police spokesperson Captain Nqob ile Gwala members of the K9 unit responded to a complaint of a business robbery in progress at Rana road, Isipingo.

When they arrived five suspects armed with firearms opened fire, she said.

A police officer from the Umlazi K9 unit sustained a gunshot wound to the right lower leg and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

Gwala said one suspect died at the scene during the exchange of gunfire. An unlicensed firearm was found next to the deceased.

Charges of business robbery, attempted murder and inquest are being investigated. The remaining suspects are still being sought by the police.
