Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating the murder of two learners from KwaNxusa High School near the town of Melmoth in the Mthonjaneni Municipality.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said on Saturday morning the two learners were attacked and killed earlier this week.

There are still few details surrounding the incident.

Blessed Gwala, the IFP’s provincial spokesperson on community safety, earlier said he understood that four learners had been killed and one injured in a "faction fight" on Thursday.

However, police could on Saturday morning only confirm two deaths.

Mbhele said the circumstances surrounding the learners’ deaths were still being investigated.

Gwala said authorities in the area must work to put a stop to any revenge attacks.

"We call upon Amakhosi, Izinduna and councillors to urgently call an imbizo to prevent the spread of this violence. We cannot allow this situation to run out of hand. We must stop the bloodshed urgently," he said in a statement.

KZN education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the department had been shocked to hear of the two deaths, and was following up to try and find out what happened.
