Pretoria- A Hammanskraal community leader on Wednesday told journalists and police to leave the area as they were portraying the area as a dangerous place.

"Speaking on behalf of the community I would like to make a humble plea that after everything is done and settled, all the police and journalists must just leave our area because now we are portrayed as Hammanskraal is this dangerous place that no one can go to. That can't be," said Fortune Mathabathe.

"We are a peaceful community, we are not dangerous. There is no more dangerous Hammanskraal."

Violence broke out in the area on Monday when employees of the Red Ants security company, SAPS and Tshwane Metro Police arrived to flatten shacks and evict people.

Two Red Ants employees were killed and six injured in an altercation with the residents. Five people were arrested, one of them for murder.

He conveyed his condolences to the families of those killed, and maintained that locals had killed them in self-defence.

"We had people coming out of nowhere firing rubber bullets and tearing down our shacks, with us not knowing what was happening," he said.

They welcomed the decision to suspend evictions in the area. The attempt to evict them had caught them unawares and notices about it had not reached them.
