Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police have seized more than 50 firearms and arrested more than 40 suspects while conducting festive season operations in the province.

Various police operations were conducted between November 29 to December 5.

On Monday, police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said 52 firearms and 293 live rounds of ammunition were seized.

Among the firearms was a shotgun, rifles, AK47s, homemade firearms and pistols, he said.

Forty-four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Gwala added that the seized firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in other crimes.

"All arrested suspects appeared in different magistrate's courts across the province."

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said police would continue to root out illegal firearms that were "in the wrong hands of the criminals".

"We are pleased that members are working tirelessly during this festive season. Community members are encouraged to continue with their support in the fight against crime by providing valuable information about wanted criminals," she said.
