Johannesburg - Various stories covering the political aftermath of the State Capture report grabbed headlines across South Africa this week, ROi Africa reported on Sunday.

Articles about the controversial report, the ANC NEC's meeting and calls from various groups for President Jacob Zuma to step down made up over a third of all news in the country, the media monitoring group’s head Tonya Khoury said in a statement.

The new public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane, also featured prominently, with just under 14% of all local news about her.

On social media platforms, the ANC NEC meeting in which Zuma's fitness to hold office was debated, made up nearly 40% of all chatter.

"Gareth Cliff's resignation from Idols and the story related to Mara Louw put Cliff as the third largest social media story this week," said Khoury.

US president-elect Donald Trump continued to dominate global interest, snatching over two-thirds of all international news interest.

The plane crash involving the Brazilian Chapecoense football team was a distant second with just over 8% of coverage.  The death of former Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro grabbed just under 4% of the headlines.
