Pietermaritzburg - A collision involving two cars on the R617 on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg on Monday morning claimed the lives of two people, including a pregnant woman.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics who rushed to the scene had found the mangled wreckage of two cars in the middle of the road.

"On inspection of the first vehicle, paramedics found a man lying motionless inside. He had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene," he said.

Meiring said that medics then turned their attention to the second car.

"Two women were lying inside. Paramedics assessed the driver, believed to have been a number of months pregnant, and found that she too had sustained multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and she was declared dead.

"The female passenger was found to be in a serious condition, having sustained multiple injuries.

"ER24 and EMRS paramedics carefully extricated the patient from the vehicle and began their treatment, providing her with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, she was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment," he said.
