Mahikeng – North West Province Premier Supra Mahumapelo on Monday said he was saddened by the deaths of four people in the Hartbeespoort Dam fire.

"On behalf of the North West provincial government, we send our condolences to the families affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult moment," he said in a statement.

The SA Maritime Safety Authority launched an initial investigation into the cause of the fire on board a party boat, the Prime Time, which left the four people dead on Saturday.

Around 200 people were on the vessel.

Three passengers drowned and a fourth died on board the vessel after being trapped in the bathroom during the fire.

Mahumapelo called on authorities to determine the cause of the blaze.

"We urge our police to ensure that the necessary investigations are conducted to determine the cause of the fire," he said.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Pelonomi Makau said authorities had opened an inquest docket into the matter.

She said the cause of the fire was still unknown.
