Durban – President Jacob Zuma’s powers to make appointments do not extend to premiers of provinces, the Presidency said on Monday.

The Constitution empowered the president to appoint the deputy president, ministers, and deputy ministers, spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga said.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu confirmed on Monday that he was going to step down after ANC leaders put him under pressure to do so. Transport MEC Willies Mchunu had been tipped to replace him.

During a press briefing at the end of the ANC’s 8th provincial elective conference in November 2015, ANC deputy chairperson Willies Mchunu told reporters that only Zuma could hire and fire premiers.

“Such powers do not extend to the appointment of premiers, who according to the Constitution are elected by the relevant provincial legislatures,” Ngqulunga said.
