Pretoria Grade 1s end up consoling one another

2016-01-13 12:09

Pretoria - Teachers and parents ended up dragging tearful Grade 1's into class at a school in Mamelodi, Pretoria on Wednesday morning. But friendships were also being created as pupils consoled one another.

Some parents were seen begging their children to get into the classrooms at Balebogeng Primary School, while some teachers firmly guided the children clutching to their parents into classes.

Many children cried loudly with their parents clearly battling to maintain their composure.

"We spoke about the day and I informed him that he must not cry. He agreed - but when he saw others crying, he too started. He didn't want to let go of my hand," said the mother, who did not want to be named.

Pinky Phoku, a Grade R teacher, said as much as the children cried, they tried to make it easy for them.

"We give them hugs when they are crying and try to make sure they don't feel as though school is horrible. We keep them busy to forget that the parents are gone," she said.

Soon after, the tears were replaced by sounds of singing as the teachers had the learners do activities.
