Prison cell for armed cellphone robber

Bloemfontein – A Free State man has been sentenced to 60 years in jail for robbing four women with a firearm, Free State police said on Wednesday.

On Monday, the Virginia Magistrate’s Court sentenced Mandla Tsoaeli, 35, to 15 years for each four counts of robbery with a firearm, Captain Malebo Khosana said.

The sentences would run concurrently.

The four women - aged between 33, 29, 21 and 22 - were attacked on their way home from church in Saaiplaas, Virginia, on December 12, 2015.

Tsoaeli stopped the women, ordered them not to scream, pointed a firearm at them, and demanded money and cellphones.

He then ordered the women not to scream, before aiming at the ground and firing one shot. He fled the scene with four cellphones and R1 500.

The women reported the matter and Tsoaeli was arrested after facial identification.
