Johannesburg – The University of Witwatersrand is probing the alleged rape of one of its students at its Junction residence complex, it said on Thursday.

The complaint was laid a few weeks ago, Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel said.

Patel said the matter was investigated by the gender equity office (GEO) in line with the university's sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape policy.

"The university has worked with the complainant for the last few weeks and the nature of this engagement is confidential.

"We urge everyone to respect the confidentiality and integrity of the complainant, who is our first priority," she said.

Patel urged anyone who had been a victim of gender-based harm at Wits to report their complaint to the GEO.

She said the sexual harassment advisory committee will ensure that anyone "who has stood in the way of justice or minimised rape in any way will be held to account".

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said a case of rape had not been opened.

"We don't have a record of the case. We only made a report of what the university management told us, but no student has come to open a case."
