Durban - Police have scrambled to send reinforcements to Folweni, south of Durban, where days of unrest resulted in a mob attempting to torch a police station on Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that a gang of over 20 irate Folweni residents had surrounded the Folweni police station.

“Community members came to the Folweni SAPS yesterday and threw a petrol bomb through the charge office window. The charge office did not catch fire,” Zwane said.

“The window was damaged. No members were injured,” he added.

It is believed the protests were sparked by unhappiness over councillors.

Zwane said that members of the Public Order Policing Unit had rushed to the scene after it was reported that the station was under attack.

“The members from POP fired stun grenades to disperse the crowd. A case of attempted murder was opened for investigation and no arrest was reported,” he said.

The police have engaged in pitch battles with the community for nearly ten days.
