Cape Town – One of South Africa’s foremost legal minds, constitutional law expert Professor Pierre de Vos, is competing against 58 other candidates to become the next Public Protector.

Thuli Madonsela’s seven-year term ends in October. Members of the public have until Friday, July 8, to comment on, or object, to any of the 59 candidates.

According to a profile on the University of Cape Town’s department of public law website, De Vos is the Claude Leon Foundation Chair in Constitutional Governance and teaches constitutional law.

He holds a B Comm (law), LLB and LLM (cum laude) from the Stellenbosch University, an LLM from Columbia University in New York, and an LLD from the University of Western Cape.

He taught at the University of Western Cape from 1993 to June 2009 and held a professorship at that institution from 2001.

Since November 2006, he has been writing a blog, called Constitutionally Speaking, on social and political issues. Between 1500 and 2000 people look at it daily, he says.

He is active on social media and has almost 63 000 followers on Twitter and more than 4 900 friends on Facebook.

According to his Facebook page, he was born on June 29, 1963, making him 53.

On his LinkedIn profile he states that he is interested in constitutional law, sexual orientation and the law, race and affirmative action, social and economic rights, and social justice.

He is passionate about art and culture, civil rights and social action, economic empowerment, education, health, human rights, politics, and poverty alleviation.

According to a UCT profile compiled for the inaugural Pierre de Vos lecture in 2011, he has served as board chairperson of human rights organisation Aids Legal Network. He is a board member of the Triangle Project and the Ubuntu Development Forum.

He is the author of Slegs Blankes/Whites Only, a book published in 1994. It tells the story of a young Afrikaans man coming to terms with the fact that his father was a member of the apartheid government’s hit squad, and with his own sexuality.
