Cape Town – A 23-year-old woman was hospitalised after she reportedly fell off a horse and it kicked her on Monday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The incident happened between Kabeljous and Gamtoos, about 11km across soft beach sand from Jeffreys Bay, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander Rieghard Janse van Rescburg said.

He said NSRI Jeffreys Bay duty crew members responded to the emergency at 16:47.

The woman was on an arranged group horse ride.

"The Kouga water emergency action plan was activated and we dispatched our sea rescue quad bike and our rescue vehicle," he said.

Ambulances, including from Eastern Cape government health and private care services, also responded.

The woman, from Koffiefontein, was treated by the NRSI medical crew.

An emergency services paramedic used a quad bike to get the woman out of the area after ambulances were not able to reach the scene across the soft sand, he said.

The woman was treated for a suspected concussion and transported to hospital.
