Johannesburg - A selection of quotes from some of the week's major local stories. 

“I think you will be well-placed to ask the Guptas or Jonas. Where do I come in? I have absolutely no business with that.” – President Jacob Zuma replying to DA leader Mmusi Maimane’s question on whether the Guptas offered Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas the job of finance minister.

“I am in charge of the government. I appoint. In terms of the Constitution there is no minister who is here who was ever appointed by the Guptas. Ministers who are here were appointed by me.” – Zuma.

“There were reasons why Minister Nene had to be redeployed. Those reasons are the reasons of government.” – Zuma when asked if a third party influenced his decision to sack Nhlanhla Nene as finance minister.

“But they hap (sic) previously asked me to become Minister of Public Enterprises when Barbara Hogan got the chop, provided that I would drop the SAA flight to India and give to them. I refused and so I was never made a Minister. The President was in another room when they offered me this in Saxonworld (sic).” – A Facebook post by former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor , who was once chair of Parliament’s public enterprises committee, claiming the Guptas offered her a ministerial job.

"So it's very unfortunate that all of a sudden some business people are singled out on their relationship with government as if government is not supposed to create relationships with business people. I find that to be very unfortunate." - Former Finance Minister David van Rooyen on claims that the Gupta family is influencing political appointments.

"I rejected this out of hand. The basis of my rejection of their offer is that it makes a mockery of our hard earned democracy, the trust of our people and no one apart from the President of the Republic appoints ministers." – Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas commenting on the Gupta family’s having offered him the job of finance minister.

"I hope he dies a slow and painful death and that is what I feel. And I hope he goes through what my son had to go through in those last moments." – Gaynor Adams, commenting on the fate of Aljar Swartz, who killed and decapitated her 15-year-old son Lee Adams.

“All I am saying, my lady, is this question of the accused can only be treated by an expert in spiritual welfare and that is the reverend.” – Lawyer Sheriff Mohamed, explaining to the Western Cape High Court that his demon-possessed client, Aljar Swartz, needs an exorcism. 

"The decision by the South African government not to arrest Al-Bashir was inconsistent with South African law. Therefore the application is dismissed." – Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Carole Lewis rejecting government’s appeal against a high court ruling that its failure to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was unconstitutional. 

"There was no apology, no ‘we are sorry’. They did not even call an ambulance." – An unnamed taxi driver, after police opened fire on his minibus, killing two of the McDonalds employees he was taking home in Blue Downs, Cape Town, after midnight on Monday. Police apparently thought they were criminals.

 “We would do it again and there was no reason for them to be attacked for no reason. I would hate to think of myself as a hero, I think I was a good person on that day.” – University of Pretoria student Modise Sefume after he and another student, Msizi Ndlovu, helped two women working at the British High Commission, when protesting students attacked their car during a protest last year.

"Schools that are named after apartheid heroes or are insulting, they have until the end of September to change those names. This is the new South Africa. Names which glorify apartheid must go. So apartheid names must fall." – Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
