Mbombela - Mpumalanga's education department has set aside R104m to help students who need bursaries in the province this year.

Education MEC Reginah Mhaule warned bursary recipients against wasting the money.

"We had 11 000 applications, which means those who were approved are fortunate. They should therefore work around the clock to commit themselves and focus on their studies, because if they fail we will withdraw their bursaries," Mhaule told a News24 Correspondent.

Mhaule said the bursaries would go to students in their first, second, and third years of study and would pay for tuition fees, accommodation, stationery, meals, and monthly pocket money.

The province's top 10 performers for 2015 each automatically qualified for a bursary. Students with disabilities would be given priority.

"We are encouraged by institutions and businesses that support and contribute by giving bursaries to deserving students. All successful students will receive notifications during the second week of February 2016," she said.

The province's matric pass rate was 78.6% in 2015.

Mhaule was pleased with the increase in the number of full-time matrics who passed.

Of the 54 980 full-time matrics who wrote the finals, 43 229 passed. This was 7 614 more than in 2014.
