Johannesburg - A suspected robber caught at the scene of a crime on Wednesday afternoon had to be treated by paramedics after he was beaten up.

The incident happened in Randburg between 15:00 and 15:45.

A Netcare 911 spokesperson said it was unclear who had assaulted the man, but he was given medical treatment before being taken away by the police.

Paramedics also treated a security guard who was injured when the suspected robber and his accomplices opened fire after robbing a local business.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a group of men entered a business property... and held people hostage demanding cellphones and watches, among other things," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

"During the robbery, a security guard at the premises was wounded as fleeing robbers opened fire."

The guard was treated on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital.
