Bloemfontein – A Free State rapist was caught when he was found in possession of a cellphone he had stolen from one of the women he had targeted, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

The Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court sentenced Clement Tlale, 25, from Lusaka village, to two life sentences on Thursday for raping two women, NPA regional spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said.

He received another 15 years for stealing one of the women’s cellphones. The sentences would run concurrently.

The two women, aged 20 and 24, were on their way to church when Tlale and an accomplice forced them into bushes at knifepoint and raped them on January 30. They reported the crimes, but police failed to find the perpetrators.

Tlale was arrested for a separate crime on February 5, and he was found in possession of the cellphone. Police took the phone, called one of the contacts listed and discovered that the phone had in fact been stolen. When police spoke to the woman, she told them about the rapes.

DNA evidence linked Tlale to the crimes, but he denied his involvement. His accomplice was still at large and Tlale had refused to tell police his whereabouts.
