Cape Town - Rashied Staggie, the former leader of the Hard Livings gang, is understood to be one of four suspects arrested by the Hawks on Thursday for being in possession of handguns and suspected stolen contraband.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha on Friday said four suspects were arrested on the N1 in Cape Town at midday while they were following up on leads related to a theft case in Johannesburg.

"Three luxury vehicles, driving in a convoy on N1 near Canal Walk, were stopped and searched, resulting in the arrest of four suspects aged between 20 and 60 year old," he said.

"[This] after three handguns, several boxes of expensive whiskey and cigars were found in their possession."

Staggie was one of those arrested, according to a police source who did not want to be named. Staggie is currently on parole.

"The contraband, worth a substantial amount, was confiscated in the process," Ramovha said.

The four were charged with unlawful possession of firearms, ammunition and suspected stolen property and were expected in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court soon.

Staggie was granted full parole in 2014 after serving 13 years' behind bars. This after he was convicted of burglary at the Faure police armoury.
