Cape Town - A reckless and negligent driving case has been opened after two police vehicles collided in Melkbossstrand on Saturday night, SAPS have confirmed.

Spokesperson FC Van Wyk said both vehicles involved in the crash are from Atlantis police, and the officers had been on their way to Melkbosstrand to assist at a crime scene. 

The crash, between the N19 robots and the Duinefontein Road turn off, resulted in five officers being taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said paramedics found fire and rescue personnel removing one person from a police vehicle when the arrived at the scene.

The casualties had suffered moderate to severe injuries and were stabilised before being taken to hospital.

According to Siddall, six people had been injured, but Van Wyk said their information listed it as five.
