Cape Town – Firefighters have not been able to control wildfires in Paarl despite resources being stretched to the limit, an official in the area said.

Incident spokesperson Marietjie Engelbrecht told News24 the fires was not under control.

According to Engelbrecht, roughly 1000 ha of vegetation has burnt down.

Some 200 fire fighters, 18 fire fighting vehicles, two Air Force helicopters and two Working on Fire helicopters have been deployed to the scene.

No loss of life has been reported.

On Tuesday morning, the main building on the Calais wine estate burnt down.

Additionally 137 residents of the Olyvenbosch and Salem farms had to be evacuated on Tuesday morning, Drakenstein Fire Head Derick Damons said.

Meanwhile wildfires in Stilbaai have been brought under control, Working on Fire said.

A spotter plane, fixed wing water bomber and a helicopter was deployed to the area.

The Western Cape department of Public Works said on Tuesday that firefighters were battling 19 fires in the province.

City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for safety JP Smith said that the current wave of wildfires is suspicious.

“The spate of fires is truly suspicious and we have an investigations team that is looking into it,” Smith said.
