Johannesburg - A retired police officer shot and killed his daughter before turning the gun on himself in Boksburg, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The shooting happened at the daughter's Dawn Park home, in front of four witnesses aged between 11 and 19, on Monday morning around 06:00, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

Dlamini would not confirm who called police. It was apparently one of the man’s grandchildren.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said they declared the 60-year-old man and the 30-year-old woman dead on the scene.

The four witnesses were offered trauma counseling.
