PICS: More than 20 killed in devastating Somali restaurant siege

More than twenty people have been killed in an attack on a Somali beachfront restaurant, with Islamic extremist group al-Shabaab claiming responsibility for the siege.

Johannesburg - The government condemned the "cowardly" terrorist attack that took place at Lido Beach in Mogadishu, Somalia, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said on Friday.

South Africa stood with the African Union and the international community in condemning the attacks that killed innocent civilians, spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said in a statement.

"South Africa remains committed to supporting Somalia through capacity and institution-building projects and calls on all groups and individuals who remain outside the political process to renounce violence, desist from cowardly acts of terrorism and join the peace-driven political processes of reconciliation to ensure the development and prosperity of Somalia."

President Jacob Zuma, on behalf of South Africa and the government, sent condolences to his counterpart, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, the people of Somalia and the families of those who were killed and injured.

The BBC said that gunmen opened fire at the popular beach in Mogadishu on Thursday; 20 people were reportedly killed.

The BBC said a car drove into the entrance of a restaurant close to the beach and exploded. Afterwards, five gunmen opened fire at people on the beach.
