Johannesburg – The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) will be embroiled in a court battle next month for alleged discrimination against women.

In a statement, the SAJBD said proceedings had been initiated in the Equality Court relating to the issue of women singing at the Yom Hashoah Memorial Prayer Ceremony in Cape Town this year.

The Yom Hashoah Memorial Prayer Ceremony is observed to commemorate the millions of Jewish people who were killed during World War ll.

"The matter will be dealt with in the ordinary course of litigation," it said.

SAJBD said the matter was part of an ongoing conversation with the various sectors of its community who are deeply invested in the ceremony.

"The SAJBD will continue to work towards an inclusive ceremony where all members of the Jewish community can attend without exception and will engage with all concerned regarding this very important discussion in our community," it said.
