Pretoria- African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma says the continent of Africa looks up to South Africa to be strong.

"I received calls asking is it really that bad? I was not sure what they are talking about. How can we today be talking about hung councils? We must not squander the hard earned freedom," she said on Tuesday.

"As the AU, we look up to South Africa. If South Africa is weak, the leaders are weak, then the continent is weak."

Dlamini Zuma was speaking at National Women's Day celebrations held at the Union Buildings. Her address comes days after the Local Government Elections results were released and the majority of the Metros in the county had no outright winners

The councils now require coalitions in order for a governments to be formed.

She said the country needed to honour the women of 1956 by ensuring that the country was viable and strong.

"We owe it to this women to ensure that South Africa is strong. Let's make sure we will never squander their sacrifices.

"Those women didn't have money but they used the little they had and achieved results. Let's follow in their footsteps," said Dlamini-Zuma.
