Bloemfontein – A 3-year-old boy who was reunited with his family in South Africa after spending his life in a Mozambican jail with his mother is finally living a normal life outside prison, Free State MEC for social development Sisi Ntombela said on Friday.

His South African mother was jailed for drug trafficking in 2013.

“We are very happy and satisfied with his progress. We have been making regular visits just to check if he was adapting to the new environment," Ntombela said.

"He is enjoying playing outside and he is even making new friends now.

“Although the language was a bit of a problem, the boy is now learning siSotho."

The boy lived with his mother in a Mozambican prison. He was born while his mother was incarcerated.

She is serving a 12-year sentence.

On April 14, the boy was received by Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini at OR Tambo International Airport, with the boy's foster parents.

The mother requested that the boy, who may not be identified, be placed in the care of her extended family living in the Free State.
