Johannesburg - The SACP says it's worried that the Umkhonto We Sizwe Military Veterans Association is being seen as nothing more than a tool to be used during ANC factional battles.

The SACP said it was concerned about the association's image and had asked to meet with the current leadership in the new year.

"As the SACP we have a direct interest in Umkhonto We Sizwe," said SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande.

The SACP held a media briefing on Friday, following an augmented central Committee meeting.

It discussed a number of issues including; state capture, the ANC succession debate and the increasing securitisation of the state.

It also reflected on the 55th year anniversary of the ANC's liberation army.

"Umkhonto We Sizwe was co-founded by both the ANC and the SACP as equal co-founders," said Nzimande.

He said the SACP recognised the current MKMVA, which is led by Kebby Maphatsoe. It also recognised the right of former commanders of the ANC liberation army to meet.

The latter are expected to hold their own conference on Saturday.

Nzimande said although a delegation from the communist party would not be attending the council, one of his deputies Solly Mapaila would be attending the event but in his capacity as a former MK member.
