Johannesburg – The ANC national list conference would bring resolution to challenges and conflicts, the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) said on Sunday.

In a statement Sanco expressed satisfaction with the ANC’s local government candidates nomination process as well as “progress being registered in the national list conference".

The party's national list conference started on Friday in Irene, Pretoria ahead of a national executive committee (NEC) meeting.

Sanco general secretary, Skhumbuzo Mpanza, said the NEC was confident interventions over the Northern Cape, Western Cape and North West Province candidate lists would resolve the challenges encountered so far.

"... we are disappointed that processes leading up to the national list conference has in some provinces been marred by acts of violence, intimidation, disruptions and manipulation of nomination meetings," he said.

Conference outcomes

Mpanza said progress was being made to ensure the outcomes of the conference represented the wishes of communities and met the ANC's guidelines for gender equality and youth representation.

The conference was attended by the provincial list committees, alliance partners and the entire NEC. The NEC would then ratify the final list of candidates for the party.

The ANC, for the first time, has decided to announce its mayoral candidates ahead of the elections.

It was not clear exactly when this would happen, but it would happen early enough to allow the candidates to campaign, secretary general Gwede Mantashe said earlier this week.

It was likely only the mayoral candidates for the metros and district municipalities would be announced.
