Cape Town – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Wednesday commended the arrest of a Swellendam police sergeant on allegations of corruption, drugs trafficking and defeating the ends of justice.

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Lloyd Ramovha told News24 the officer was arrested by the Hawks anti-corruption unit after a sting operation.

Ramovha said the man "had been on the Hawks' radar" after allegations of illicit dealings while using a marked state vehicle.

"The sergeant was reportedly arrested at the drop location while delivering 30g of tik in exchange for R1 000."

He is expected to appear in the Swellendam Magistrate's Court in the Western Cape on Thursday.

Sanco spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu said an anti-corruption shake-up needed to be intensified "to rid the police service of corrupt elements that are part of the drug trade".

Mahalangu called for the immediate suspension of the officer and that no bail be granted.

"The war against crime must first be won within the police service before it can be won in communities. An onslaught to unmask officers that are a disgrace to the dignified blue uniform will restore public confidence in law enforcement."
