Cape Town – A traditional healer is expected back in court this week for allegedly defrauding a family of over R240 000 after promising to double their money and pay for a bigger house.

The 26-year-old Ugandan national, whose name was not immediately available, appeared in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court on Friday after police tracked him down in Browns Farm.

Operating in Site C, Khayelitsha, he allegedly convinced a family to sell their house and buy a bigger house in another area.

He apparently promised to pay for the house.

"The family believed him and sold the house," said Nyanga police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

After handing over their money, the family tried calling his number, but were told by someone else that he had died in a car accident.

They then approached the police for assistance.

Sitshitshi said the man tried to flee in his vehicle when he saw officers and the family, but was caught in New Crossroads.

When he took the police to his home in Delft, officers recovered more than R70 000 scattered around.

His next court appearance was set down for Friday, said Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

Nyanga police said this was not the first scam they had dealt with.

"People must stop telling everyone about their intentions, because most victims are people who received pension money. Do not believe any pamphlet you see with testimonies because they are false."
