Durban – A driver transporting school children and one of his teenage passengers were shot on Wednesday in Phoenix, north of Durban, paramedic services said on Wednesday.

"Reports from the scene indicate that the vehicle that was transporting school children was at an intersection when two men approached them and fired a shot," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Botha said a bullet hit the driver, went through him and struck a 15-year-old passenger in the thigh.

"The Netcare 911 and provincial paramedics arrived [at the clinic] and found that the bullet had travelled through the driver and struck a 15-year-old in the thigh."

Botha said both the injured were transported to a local clinic before paramedics had arrived at the scene.

Both were treated at the clinic and transported to hospital for further care.
