Durban - Scores of taxi commuters have been injured in two separate minibus taxi accidents on opposite ends of KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday morning.

In the first accident, 13 people were injured when the taxi they were travelling in rolled in the Mtembeni area, off Edendale Road in Pietermaritzburg.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said that paramedics arrived on scene and found injured people sitting around the taxi.

"Upon assessment by paramedics, it was found that the patients sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were treated and are being transported to local hospitals for further medical care," she said.

She added that the cause of the accident was at this point unclear.

In another incident, sixteen people had to be rescued from the Boboyi River near Izotsha on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast after a taxi veered from the road and plunged into the water.

KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said that the people had to be pulled from the water before medics administered urgent care.
