Cape Town - Police divers are on Monday expected to continue the search for a 21-year-old man who is missing and presumed drowned in the sea off Hawston near Hermanus.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that rescue volunteers had responded to a report of a drowning at 16:00 on Sunday.

“On arrival at the scene a search commenced for a local man who had reportedly been seen going underwater 300 meters from shore after being swept off rocks by waves and caught in rip currents,” he said.

“Despite an extensive search no sign of the man has been found and a Police Dive Unit have been alerted and will continue and ongoing search operation. Police have opened an investigation,” he added.

In another incident, NSRI volunteers also responded to reports of a drowning in Glentana.

Prior to our arriving on the scene, we were informed that lifeguards and paramedics were attending to an 11-year-old female who had washed onto the beach after getting into difficulty in the surf.”

“The child was resuscitated on the beach and transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition,” Lambinon said.
