Search for missing Stellenbosch siblings continues

2016-02-03 16:57

Cape Town - Six days after three siblings went missing, their whereabouts are still unknown, the Western Cape social development department said on Wednesday.

And while the children have absconded before, their previous jaunt lasted only a few hours.

Brothers Asanele, 7, Anele Siteleku, 8, and their sister Olwethu, 11, were last seen in the Kayamandi informal settlement in Stellenbosch on Friday at 17:10.

They have not been seen since.

Spokesperson Sihle Ngobese said the children went missing in December last year after they were placed in a Kayamandi foster home.

"The siblings were removed from their mother as her children were not in a conducive environment. They were living in extreme poverty," he said.

The children are understood to have run away during the festive season to return to their mother.

They were found shortly thereafter.

"As the days tick by, our concern for the welfare of these kids is increasing," Ngobese said.

"A number of leads are being followed up on and a team of social workers are dealing with the case."

He declined to comment on the leads, saying it may jeopardise their efforts.

The department appealed to those living in the Mbekweni and Paarl areas to keep a look-out for the youngsters.

Anyone with information should call social worker Elsabe Raymond on 083 485 9431, or Sergeant Marajh on 021 8095114 or 082 379 4869.
