Durban - The search for a missing Johannesburg man, presumed to have drowned while swimming in the surf in Umdloti, will continue on Monday.

The man had been swimming with a friend when they both got into difficulty. The friend was pulled to safety by lifeguards.

It is understood that the Durban Search and Rescue Unit is co-ordinating the search, which will see the deployment of boats and rescue divers.

On Sunday, News24 reported that the rescued swimmer was receiving medical care and, while traumatised, was in a stable condition.

The beach where the pair had been swimming is not a designated bathing beach, and lifeguards and other emergency service personnel had responded to the scene after an emergency call was made.

This is a developing story.
