Search on for SANDF members missing at sea

2016-04-17 11:55

Two off-duty military officers are feared drowned after they got into difficulties while swimming in Port St Johns on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

“While swimming one man got into difficulty in the surf – and according to reports a man went into the surf to attempt to assist, but he too got into difficulty,” said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon in a statement on Sunday.

“Eye-witnesses reported both men disappeared under water.??”

Lambinon said that extensive sea and shoreline searches – including the use of a helicopter and rescue craft – had been carried out since Saturday afternoon when the incident occurred on Second Beach.

However, the searches had proved unsuccessful in locating the two men – both off duty SA National Defence Force members.

The two men, one from Pretoria and one from Oudtshoorn, were in the area where military exercises have recently been conducted.
