Pretoria - Police divers were back at a river in Honingnestkrans in Pretoria North on Friday to search for the motorist who was swept away on Thursday.

Captain Riana van Aarde said divers had spotted what they assumed was Leon Strydom's car in the water earlier on Friday morning.

"They said they saw something, but they are not sure if it is the vehicle," said Van Aarde.

The diving team was, however, down two men after they were injured during rescue efforts on Thursday.

"The one policeman broke his ankle and will need an operation, while the other was scratched when they were swept into the river when they tried to get into the vehicle," Van Aarde said.

"They almost died yesterday," she said.

Strydom, 40, was on his way to work when his vehicle got swept away during heavy rains on Thursday morning.

Rescue operations had been hampered several times because of the heavy rain.

On Friday morning, Strydom's brother-in-law, Percy Pitzer, said the family was on the scene, awaiting any news.

"We are hoping to hear something soon," said Pitzer.

Emergency services said on Thursday that they assumed Strydom was dead.
