Pietermaritzburg - A dramatic robbery in central Pietermaritzburg on Monday saw four armed men escape with a safe filled with an undisclosed amount of money.

A guard from G4S Security was held up at gunpoint yesterday at the Chief Albert Luthuli Road Shell garage, while he was removing the safe from the petrol station premises.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said the four men disarmed the guard, took the safe and made their escape.

He said no one was injured during the incident and police were investigating the incident.

G4S spokesperson Wendy Hardy confirmed yesterday that a G4S guard was robbed while performing a cash collection service.

“The suspects fled the scene with the money and a G4S firearm,” said Hardy.

“Due to the professional conduct of our officer, we are thankful that no injuries were sustained during this attack.”

With yellow police tape cordoning off the G4S vehicle from the station, petrol attendants ushered in cars while police examined the scene.

Despite the frightening incident almost an hour earlier, customers still parked their vehicles to fill up with petrol and bought coffee from the Shell kiosk.

Shell spokesperson Dineo Pooe said the matter is still under investigation. “We will work closely with all relevant authorities to determine the cause of this incident.”
