Durban - A security guard was killed during a robbery in Ballito on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Tuesday morning, paramedics said.

Security guards from two different companies had arrived on the scene in the early hours of the morning and there was a shooting, said IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst.

One of the two guards died on the scene, and the other was injured.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said they found the security guard who had died still seated in his vehicle.

In a dramatic turn of events, emergency services received a call of a seriously injured man who had collapsed at the Tongaat Toll Plaza. He had been shot multiple times.

It emerged that he had allegedly been at the scene of the Ballito shooting and had sustained extensive injuries.

He was taken to hospital under police guard.
